Lustre Light

20 August, 2012

td

A series of 4 pendant shades, Lustre is the first stoneware object in the collection and is handmade in a Dutch family-run factory established over 5-generations. Lustre is the latest discovery in our continued exploration of extraordinary metallic finishes. The iridescent sheen is created by firing the stoneware shades at 1200°C using a top-secret glaze containing minerals and precious metals. The end result is a striking colour change effect reminiscent of peacock feathers or oil slicks on water.

The handmade process results in a totally unique and unrepeatable finish for each individual object. No two shades look the same as the glaze fixes to the stoneware in an unpredictable way.  This produces a wide spectrum of colour across each light, ranging from a pale lime to a deep bottle green. It is this inherent beauty and diversity that we are championing. Each customer owns something different.

The shade reflects and refracts an extraordinary spectrum of colours both internally and when lit from outside. The first stoneware object in our collection, it is available in 4 geometric designs inspired by a collision of Mayan temples and Art Deco constructions.

Lustre will launch at Luminosity at The Dock during London Design Festival and available to buy online in the UK from September.

Luminosity at The Dock - London Design Festival

27 July, 2012

td

The dock, hosted by Tom Dixon and sponsored by Derwent London, sees our West London canal-side home erupt into an international design emporium during the London Design Festival.

We welcome hyperactive creativity from three European friends including Slovenian sophisticate Nika Zupanc in her solo UK debut, Parisian concept store, Merci and Dutch design super star Piet Hein Eek.

This year our production radiates around a theme of Luminosity. Exploring artificial light in all its forms and revealing Lustre, our first ever stoneware pendant light, made using a secret glaze to give a striking iridescent sheen.

A one-off exhibition of chocolate sculptures inspired by London will be held at The Dock exploring the versatility and potential of chocolate, to create six one-off free standing London-inspired sculptures. Moooi will host 'The Unexpected Welcome' showcasing their latest lighting, furniture and accessories.

We will also launch Eclectic, a brand new collection of everyday home accessories, giftware and design objects. Using our favoured palette of heavyweight, honest and valuable materials copper, marble, cast iron and wood.

Dock Kitchen restaurant serves up lunches and dinners on-site throughout the week and The Dock is proud to introduce Tart, our new in-house bakery serving lunches, teas and cakes, all overlooking the waters of our canal basin.
